Much will be written about the unique nature of the 2013 vintage. It came during what will now be seen as the beginning of a major drought. Vines had just enough soil moisture reserves in the spring to grow strong, health canopies. However, berry size was quite small, even with a decent crop, which came from the cluster number, rather than weight. Temperatures were relatively mild during the growing season, with very few heat spikes and virtually no rain. This made for highly concentrated wines, with firm tannins and plenty of natural, mouthwatering acidity.
The Mad Hatter from 2013 is deep, dense, and aromatically flamboyant. It is packed with flavor—fresh blueberry and blackberry, cinnamon, nutmeg, and burnt caramel. The wine’s bright perfume continues to waft up from the glass as it opens. One can pick up the characteristics of each of the four varieties: the powerful fruit of the Cabernet Sauvignon, the licorice spice and savory quality of the Cabernet Franc, the Merlot’s juicy blue fruits, and the brooding, dark nature of the Petit Verdot. It all comes together to create something unique and special in this exciting vintage.
