Three Wise Men
2011 Mad Hatter Red Wine
A uniquely cool and late growing season, 2011 delivered wines with dark color, natural acidity and freshness, and a decidedly European aromatic profile. The fruit extracted easily in the fermenters, and the resulting wine went straight to barrel without settling or fining. The latest vintage of Mad Hatter is immediately open and enjoyable, with great complexity and interest. While dark and concentrated, the wine has soft, polished tannins and can be enjoyed without decanting. While at this point this vintage is already in a good place, it will continue to evolve for the coming 10-12 years.

2012 Mad Hatter Red Wine
After two challenging growing seasons, 2012 came like a gift from above. Very little rain, mild to warm temperatures, and a long, temperate Indian summer, made for fully developed fruit with plenty of density and a muscular—yet streamlined—build. The resulting wines are soft, rich, and seamless, with each of our four varieties singing in perfect harmony.
The 2012 Mad Hatter is youthful, forward, and expressive. The wine is ebullient with pure, uninhibited fruit aromas—black cherry, plum, strawberry—as well as baking spices and kirsch, which add a lift and exciting fragrance. On the palate, there is a roundness and polish that make the wine accessible and wholly enjoyable immediately, even without decanting. There is certainly enough density and structure for the wine to age for ten or more years; however, there is significant enjoyment to be had right away.
Blend: 59% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Cabernet Franc, 11% Merlot, 7% Petit Verdot
Aging: Aged for 20 months in French Oak barrels, 50% new
2013 Mad Hatter Red Wine
Much will be written about the unique nature of the 2013 vintage. It came during what will now be seen as the beginning of a major drought. Vines had just enough soil moisture reserves in the spring to grow strong, health canopies. However, berry size was quite small, even with a decent crop, which came from the cluster number, rather than weight. Temperatures were relatively mild during the growing season, with very few heat spikes and virtually no rain. This made for highly concentrated wines, with firm tannins and plenty of natural, mouthwatering acidity.
The Mad Hatter from 2013 is deep, dense, and aromatically flamboyant. It is packed with flavor—fresh blueberry and blackberry, cinnamon, nutmeg, and burnt caramel. The wine’s bright perfume continues to waft up from the glass as it opens. One can pick up the characteristics of each of the four varieties: the powerful fruit of the Cabernet Sauvignon, the licorice spice and savory quality of the Cabernet Franc, the Merlot’s juicy blue fruits, and the brooding, dark nature of the Petit Verdot. It all comes together to create something unique and special in this exciting vintage.
Blend: 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc, 6% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot
Aging: Aged for 20 months in French Oak barrels, 40% new
