2012 Semper "Ulises" Chardonnay
The 2012 vintage of Semper “Ulises” Chardonnay brings us yet another step closer to what we believe Chardonnay from the Sonoma Coast should be. This is truly an extraordinary effort from Tuck Beckstoffer.
At only 350 cases produced, this wine hails from the Ulises Valdez Silver Eagle Vineyard on the western perimeter of the Sonoma Coast, close to the Pacific Ocean. If you are looking for incredible levels of minerality, elegance and nuance, then this is your wine. The 2010 vintage of this wine offers up beautiful soaring aromas of wet slate, lemon oil, honeyed citrus flower and buttered, toasted brioche.
This Chardonnay is full bodied but retains a lightness and balance that shows more like a Montrachet than a typical massive California Chardonnay. Great acidity combined with an absolutely captivating nose and a finish that lingers on the palate makes this a true collectable that shatters the mold of California Chardonnay.
2012 Semper "Le Conquete" Chardonnay
“The Conquest” is a wine that was created to explore the possibilities of making a Chablis style chardonnay from the very best grapes sourced from the far northwestern corner of the Sonoma Coast Appellation.
The grapes for this wine were not picked early. Rather, they were sourced from a vineyard where maturity embodies fruit as well as acid, something rarely found together in American Chardonnay. Fermentation occurs over several months rather than days and the results are astounding.
The 2012 vintage of Le Conquete is a light straw yellow in the glass, which offers but a hint of what’s coming. On the nose there’s exotic citrus notes that include toasted hazelnut and fresh cut early season Asian pear. The palate showcases green apple skin, lemon juice, crushed almond and oyster liquor. The finish is mouth watering. Clean crisp elevated acid intertwined with hints of roasted hazelnuts and white figs go on and on. If you’re a fan of exceptional Grand Cru Chablis then this is an absolute must have. It’s a revolution in California Chardonnay.
